May half term saw us take the caravan to Haltwhistle, giving
plenty of opportunity to visit parts of Hadrian’s wall.
The weather was great which made it easier getting out and about. Haltwhistle
is a good place to stay because it is part way along the wall, enabling us to
visit Housesteads & Birdoswald Roman Forts, the temple
of Mithras and Chesters fort and
museum without travelling much. The benefit of English Heritage membership
being that you don’t feel you need to stay at each place too long and the kids
happily do short visits in exchange for drink, cake or ice cream, We also did
some walking and things not connected to the wall!
The Camping and Caravanning Club site is OK; like many
C&CC sites the facilities are satisfactory rather than good; the staff pedantic
about pitching your stuff in exactly the right place but otherwise the site is
relaxed and friendly. Access, despite comments on some internet forum wasn’t a
problem. There is a small Sainsbury’s in Haltwhistle itself.
